Although I may not agree with what Bartol was quoted about "no one awake upstairs", I do agree with his point about districts not being obligated to provided services to "unteachable" students. Now I know your going to slam me for "picking on children" as you say, but at least finish reading my entry before you do it.
I have a family member that works full time for the public school system and in their district there are "special ed" kids who go to school all year long (while the other kids are out for the summer). This same group of kids also have shorter breaks during the school year then the other kids like only having a week off at Christmas instead of 2. I would say these are the special ed students who Bartol would refer to as the "unteachable". Most are in wheel chairs and they require a lot of physical care. The school has become child care for them. It isn't so much about the kids being sent to school to learn, it is about free child care that the school district is required to offer and I don't see how anyone can argue that. It costs the schools a lot more money to "educate" these children then it does to educate those not in special ed. I do not think the public schools should have to offer this type of 'extra' care.
I am not saying that all children don't have a right to education. I do think that there should be better guidelines though when it comes to what the school districts are obligated to offer. I think there is a lot of information missing from this story, like WHY Bartol feels this way. Perhaps it is an issue of money. And for the parents who want to argue that their child still deserves the right to attend public school and that the school needs to better manage money, then I would assume you would have no problem paying the extra cost it takes to care for your child?

Now before someone gets on me as well let me say that I have a special needs brother who now is 21 and is still going to school. He is not totally unteachable however he is ready for the next step which for him is a work program and he has been ready since he "graduated" a few years ago. I am not close with my parents however I do care for my brother in my home every weekend and it upsets me to my parents complain about him no longer being in the yearbook (what grade would they like him listed in now) and how he does not get to participate in the activities (agian should he be on the sophmore side or the senior side of the tug rope at the pep ralley?). And lets talk about what they are working on with him at school.....he helps the janitors!!! Seriously! He is in the yearbook every year shown crushing cans or wheeling out a trash can! So it appears that while my parents are using the school for free daycare the school is also using him for free labor.

I worked in a group home with developmentally disabled adults who had the cognitive capacity of 6-18 month olds. They were blind, deaf, couldn't speak, and were wheelchair bound. They would NEVER live on their own under any circumstances.
They went to day programs, funded by the taxpayers. One of the things they were taught in the day programs was how to brush their teeth. None of them had the ability to hold a toothbrush on their own, let alone squeeze the toothpaste onto the toothbrush.
I could never come up with a better solution for what should be done with them, but when I read the news article, these were the people I think about.
OK well it really should not "cost" the school anymore to educate these kids. They get EXTRA money for every kid in special education. I certainly hope you are saying all special education student kids are "unteachable". I tend to think NO child is "unteachable". They all can LEARN something. Some need to learn life skills such as taking a shower, dressing etc but it's still learning.

Oh, for heaven's sake, calm the fuck down. I didn't say that I disagreed with it, only pointing out that this continues beyond public school. I was remarking that it was nonsensical to try to force these adults to brush their goddamn teeth when they didn't even know what a toothbrush is.
If I didn't have compassion for the disabled, I never would have worked in that environment. I certainly wasn't doing it for the measly $6 an hour I was earning.

The reason many of these kids go all year long is that it provides stability and continuity in their day to day routine. Change and not having a consistent day to day schedule can really have a negative effect on many of these kids.
Yes, it costs more to educate special needs kids but public schools have an obligation to provide an education to ALL students. And every child should be entitled to an education regardless of their "teachability".

- This may be very true but the one aspect you seem to be overlooking is the fact that these children and their families get a lot of monetary support from either:
A. Social Security Disability.
B. The Department of Mental Retardation.
C. Medicare/Medicaid.
And I am sure there are plenty of other organizations out there available for some kind of monetary aid to these families.
Yes, the parents/family will spend lots of money on their hanicapped children for whatever neccessities (sp) they may need - just as any parent does. The fact that these children are HANDICAPPED makes all the difference.
Every state governs their own laws and rules as far as education and whatnot for these children/families but there is aid out there and parents must dig to find it.
I do know this from personal experience. Obviously you have never had exposure or the opportunity to care for a hanicapped child.
So maybe next time,you yourself shouldn't be so quick to be so ignorant and stupid.

I agree in cases where they simply cannot be taught. I was a "buddy" in grade school, which meant I walked one of the boys in a wheel chair at recess time. I don't remember what he had but he couldn't talk at all and he was like a baby. Almost 10 years old. He would put his fingers in his eyes all the time kind of like thumb sucking but in his eyes. I had to make sure he didn't do that. I cannot to this day see him being able to learn anything however my heart goes out to his parents and if it is daycare then so be it. My tax dollars are being wasted on far worse things than the attempt at educating these types of children.

It's of value to have those students in public schools. The non special ed kids learn volumes of compassion, how to help and not to be frightened of those that are "different." The special needs kids need to be around "normal" kids. Sometimes what is learned isn't found in a book. It's every bit as valuable as learning any other subject. It is not baby sitting it is socialization. It is a skill as valuable as any other.

Many families with large medical bills end up having to file for bankruptcy. So maybe you have had your expenses all paid for, doesn't mean that everyone has been so fortunate. Perhaps you should take your own advice "So maybe next time,you yourself shouldn't be so quick to be so ignorant and stupid."

I so agree. I think our education system has been forced to take on the roll of daycare for these children till they turn 21 or graduate.
A good example of this was last year my daughter was in a choir concert. On the stage with all the other children performing in the high school choir was a student who had severe disabilities, he was mobile but had no communication skills at all, but he was on the stage with them. His aid was continually adjusting him and putting him back up on the stage when he would try to wander off.
In my opinion, he had no business being in a choir class because he didn't even speak, his presence on that stage took away from all the other students who had worked so hard all year to learn their songs and wanted to put on a great concert. His parents didn't even come to the concert. These kids that will never function in a life outside of a group home should not be expected to receive a higher portion of the educational funding than other students.

While I think this is a rude comment to make in some cases I have to say I agree. Now before you throw stuff, I will talk about my best friend who was pregnant the same time I was. She was informed at 3 months that the babies brain stem was not developing properly and there would be severe disabilities, the dr. advised her to abort. She choose to have surgery on the fetus and keep the baby. While now a grown adult, he is basically non-functioning. But in the end that choice ended up costing her a marriage, and what it also cost her older children so much as they were constantly caring for their younger brother. Even now she admits she probably should have made a different decision.

Well, I have to say that mentally and physically challenged kids deserve a right to a free education like everyone else in the USA!
But, I really do have a problem with behavioral kids!! That is what is costing the tax payer's money. Let's put a 1:1 associate on a behavioral kid because the parents can't control them and don't make them responsible or behave. If you look at the parents (if you can find them) they come from poverty stricken homes with no structure and no one in the house even has a job!
I'm just going to say that all of you who are sooo positive that my kid is a drain on society... you better hope to God that nothing ever happens to your kid... no accident, no horiffic illness, no drug addiction, etc. Just because your kid is born healthy doesn't give you one ounce of a guarantee and you could too end up in a situation with a child needing special education. Also, even if you're done having kids, you could stil have a granchild with special needs, ask our parents... it happens when you least expect it. If you are ever sitting on my side of the fence you'll think back to the things you wrote here & shudder.
Also, I live in California. We are middle class, 1.5 income household. We have NEVER gotten financial assistance other than 1 agency that paid for some of our equipment rental & for Alex's hearing aides. You have to have NOTHING to get SSI, Department of Retardation? I have never heard of this & Medical.. we do not qualify. We pay our own health insurance to the tune of $800/mo. So as far as the financial windfall of having a special needs child that is a crock of sh!t.
I'm a 9th grade science teacher who has a very diverse class roster. It ranges from SLIC (Severely Limited Intellectual Capacity) students (what many here have deamed "retarted") to TAG (talented and gifted).
The SLIC students come to the class, often without any aides (which is a huge mistake on the part of education; to send them in a classroom and leave) and, I, someone who has limited special education training (remember, I'm a science teacher by training) am supposed to modify their work.
I give them simple things to do; coloring, cutting and gluing, etc...but are they REALLY learning science? No, of course not. They are using this time to socialize these children. Is that fair? I guess, that depends on who you ask. But, I certainly don't think it is fair to me--someone with little sped training. And, I don't think it is fair to the children who are there to learn science--often times, having to deal with the SLIC student's outbursts (yelling, moaning); gyrations (rocking in their chairs); to mishaps in bodily functions (excrement in pants...urine on the floor). Quite often, these children are a disruption to my science classroom.
In addition, I am someone with a mild disability myself, albeit, mine is physical and not mental. When these children defficate in their pants and their aide isn't present, guess who has to change their diapers? You've guessed it...me! I'm expected to remove the clothing off a 16 year old boy, whipe feces from his bottom, diaper him and dress him again. Fair?
While I do believe socializtion is essential to these students, there needs to be a time and a place; disrupting the education needs of other students for the sake of socialization simply isn't the answer.

That reminds me of a story......I had to volunteer at a camp for disabled in college. WOW! I felt the same way. I just couldn't change a diaper of a 16 year old girl who had her period. Couldn't do it. I knew right then, I was not cut out for the profession of special ed teacher. But, thank goodness some people are in this world.

I think people are confusing special needs with severe disability. In the state I live in there is this big debate about integration and the whole de-institutionalization. Person I strongly feel there are some individuals that are not integration material. I believe there are individuals that belong in institutions. Just as there are older adults that belong in nursing homes. They are there because they will never be able to care for themselves. People confuse special needs, (disability whether physical or mental) and lump them all together. I don't think an autistic child or even a child with CP or CF is unteachable, they have the right to services and should receive the services in the educational system. However, when I see an individual that is pushed into a regular classroom to do an activity and than the "aid" cuts, pastes and basically does the activity with the individuals hands and at the end comments about taking this home to put on the fridge it isn't a teachable moment for that student. I see it happen.
As far as financial I am not saying there aren't costs to the family, but there are services out there to pay for those costs. Parents of disabled individuals feel it is their responsibility, however, in my field of work I get the individuals when they are in their 40's and 50's and their parents are too old to care for them or passed away and the individual has not been integrated into social settings. The trama to that individual is severe, not only is the only support system they have gone, but they are now being forced into a system they have no idea how to live in. I am not going to debate right or wrong, but there should be a happy medium, services are there, but people need to be willing to search for them because every state has them.

Middle class gets NO HELP. My son costs $25,000-30,000 a year in therapies. Cash, out of our pocket. Our health insirance doesn't even pay for speech therapy. And it costs $100 an hour. We get no help whatsoever. And we pay much more in taxes than what it costs the school to educate our child.
And to the teacher with the severe students and no aides in her classroom: That is your school/districts fault. They qualify for a full time aide and I bet your school is getting the money for one too. But they are using the money for something else.
My son qualifies for a full time aide and he is much less handicapped. It is the school's fault, not the kids.

We have students who stay in beds or wheelchairs all day and aides have to change their catheters and diapers. They stay until they are 21. Definitely free daycare for the parents. They send them to school sick ALL the time.

ONe of the best parties I ever went to was for a dog. It was the owner of a doggy day care. It was catered from Moe's (burritoes), they were grilling hamburgers and hotdogs and had a big cake. They also had a live band.

My son was placed in a class where half the kids are retarded/slow/special needs/whatever the current PC catch phrase is. I didn't like it. I want him in a class with other kids on his intellectual level..end of story.
I do admire the caretakers. I volunteered in my son's class and I couldn't teach this project to these other kids. I just don't have it in me.

i did it before. i even did it when i was a party consultant and one of the guests order went missing. sucks but i bet a lot of other people have done that before too.

Our household income is $35K a year. We have 2 kids, one with major medical needs and special needs. We have gotten NOTHING - don't qualify for anything.

marianne - an older lady who only posts to game threads that she starts, occassionally she shows up on the nsbr board to support Lauren and write some bitchy remark
Wildheart - only posts peapraise.
Some names I don't recognize, but clicking on them revealed that they are Pub regulars. Most are NSBR regulars, a few quietly hairflipped out. But if you're a NSBR regular you should recognize most of the names as people who regularly post.
